Meet Doug.

I’m Doug Corbitt, and I’m running for the Arkansas House of Representatives from District 54.

I grew up in the Congo (DRC) where my physician parents ran a 200-bed hospital in a remote village called “Kapanga.” From them I learned that every individual is precious, that every person should be treated with dignity, and that everyone deserves our very best.

Those values ultimately led me to a career in education, and for the last twenty-five years I have taught in the Honors College at the University of Central Arkansas. One of my favorite courses there has been a seminar on democracy as a moral ideal, not just a way of selecting our leaders.

A moral ideal is a goal worthy of our best efforts, and when we understand what “democracy” really means, we understand why it is worth fighting for. When we encourage everyone’s full participation in the processes, practices, and institutions that govern our lives, we build a better world for all. When we help make possible everyone’s full participation, we build a better world for all. When we listen to everyone’s input, we discover better solutions and thereby build a better world for all. And when we view each other as fellow citizens – rather than as opponents to be crushed, humiliated, and defeated – we build a better world for all.
